Maybe it started during childhood during a divorce or later as you moved away from home. You find yourself questioning the story of your childhood and frustrated when reflecting on the reality of your current relationship with your parents. Or maybe you simply feel the absence of a parent and a quiet grief you can’t quite name.

If this sounds familiar, you may be an adult child of parental alienation. And you are far from alone.

What Does Parental Alienation Look Like in Adulthood?

Parental alienation happens when a child is influenced, directly or subtly, to reject one or both parents. Many people don’t recognize it until years later, when distance from the family conflict finally gives them room to see it clearly.

As an adult, that early alienation can show up as confusion about why you cut off a parent, or memories that don’t match the story you grew up with. It can look like guilt or anxiety when you think about reaching out, difficulty trusting people in close relationships, a pattern of all-or-nothing thinking about the people you love, or grief over a relationship you never got the chance to have.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you adapted to an impossible situation as a child, and those adaptations followed you into adulthood.

Why Reconnecting Feels So Complicated

Many adult children want to rebuild a relationship with an alienated parent but feel frozen. Reaching out can feel like a betrayal of the parent who raised you. You may worry the rejected parent is angry with you, or that too much time has passed. You may also wonder whether your memories are even reliable.

These are heavy questions to carry alone. You don’t have to.

How Therapy Helps Adult Children of Parental Alienation

Therapy gives you a neutral space to sort through your history without pressure to reach any particular conclusion. A therapist experienced in family estrangement can help you:

Untangle your own story. Together, you can separate what you actually experienced from what you were told to believe, at your own pace.

Process the grief. Losing a parent while they’re still alive is a real loss. Naming and grieving it is often the first step toward peace.

Release the guilt. Children are never responsible for alienation. Therapy helps you put down blame that was never yours to carry.

Decide what reconnection looks like for you. Healing doesn’t require reconciliation. Some adult children rebuild the relationship. Others find closure without contact. Therapy supports whichever path is right for you.

Prepare for reunification, if you choose it. If you decide to reach out, a therapist can help you set boundaries, manage expectations, and navigate the first conversations.

When to Consider Therapy for Family Estrangement

You might be ready if thoughts about your estranged parent keep resurfacing, a life event like a wedding, a birth, or an illness has stirred old questions, family patterns are affecting your marriage or your own parenting, or you want to reach out but don’t know where to start.

Here’s the simplest readiness test: if you’re reading this and something in you feels seen, that’s enough. You don’t need a plan. You just need a willingness to explore.

Therapy That Works Across State Lines

Estranged families are often scattered across the country, and healing shouldn’t depend on geography. Lisa Rogers is licensed in multiple states, so you can work through this wherever you live, and family sessions can include loved ones in other states when the time is right.

Your Story Isn’t Finished

Whatever happened in your childhood, you get to decide what happens next. Contact Lisa Rogers Counseling to schedule a consultation.

Sibling relationships are often the longest connections we have in our lives. They begin before we form memories and continue long after parents are gone. Yet when these bonds can fracture in adulthood and many people assume there is nothing to do but accept the silence. The truth is that sibling therapy can be one of the most meaningful steps you take toward repair, and it works even when you and your sibling live in different states.

The Quiet Weight of Sibling Estrangement

Estrangement between adult siblings rarely happens in a single moment. It builds slowly through years of small wounds, unspoken resentments, parental favoritism, financial disagreements, caregiving disputes, or grief that was never processed together. Many people carry this loss privately, telling themselves it is no big deal. But research consistently shows that strained sibling relationships are linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and loneliness in midlife. The wound is real, even when no one talks about it.

What Sibling Therapy Actually Looks Like

Sibling therapy is a form of family therapy focused on the unique dynamic between brothers and sisters. A trained therapist like Lisa Rogers helps each person feel heard, identifies the patterns that keep you stuck, and creates space for repair conversations that feel safer than they would on your own. Sessions can address topics like childhood roles you have outgrown, lingering resentments, communication breakdowns, or how to navigate aging parents together.

It is also one of the most accessible forms of therapy for people who live apart. Telehealth has made it possible for siblings across state lines to meet in the same virtual room each week. Whether one of you is in California and the other in New York, you can sit down together and do the work without anyone needing to travel.

Signs Therapy Might Be a Good Fit for You

Not every estranged sibling pair is ready for joint sessions, and that is okay. Therapy may be a good fit if you notice some of the following signs.

You find yourself thinking about your sibling often, even after years of distance. You feel grief, anger, or guilt that has not faded with time. You have tried to reconnect and the conversation keeps breaking down in the same predictable way. A life event is coming, such as a wedding, a new baby, or a parent’s declining health, and you want to face it differently this time. Both of you are willing, even cautiously, to try.

If your sibling is not ready to join, individual therapy is still a powerful option. You can work on your own grief, set boundaries, untangle childhood patterns, and prepare for a future conversation if and when it comes.

What Healing Can Look Like

Reconciliation is not always the goal of sibling therapy. Sometimes the work leads to a renewed and warmer relationship. Other times it leads to clearer boundaries, a peaceful distance, or simply the ability to attend a family gathering without dread. All of these are meaningful outcomes. What therapy offers is the chance to stop carrying the weight alone and to understand the relationship with more compassion and less reactivity.

Taking Action is the Hardest Part

Reaching out is often the hardest part. You do not need to have the perfect script or even know exactly what you want to say. A brief consultation with Lisa Rogers, who specializes in adult sibling relationships can help you decide whether joint or individual work makes the most sense for you right now. Healing is possible, and whether your sibling lives down the street or across the country, you do not have to do it alone.

They shared your childhood home, your holidays, your history. But somewhere along the way, the relationship fractured, and now the silence between you feels impossible to cross. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Adult sibling estrangement is increasingly common, and it carries a quiet, complicated grief that friends and even partners can struggle to understand.

Adult sibling therapy offers a structured, compassionate space to begin healing that rift. The goal is reconciliation, better communication, or perhaps simply finding peace with where things stand.

What Is Adult Sibling Therapy?

Adult sibling therapy is a form of relationship counseling focused specifically on the unique dynamics between children typically raised in a common upbringing. It could be between specific siblings or all. It may involve siblings meeting together with a therapist, individual sessions to process personal feelings, or a combination of both. Unlike couples therapy or family therapy with parents present, sibling therapy centers the adult relationship on its own terms, honoring that you are no longer children navigating a shared household, but two separate people with separate lives, wounds, and perspectives.

A skilled therapist helps siblings identify patterns that developed in childhood and follow them into adulthood, create space for honest conversation without it turning into an argument, and work toward outcomes that both parties can live with, even when full reconciliation isn’t the immediate goal.

What Causes Adult Sibling Estrangement?

Estrangement rarely happens overnight. It typically builds through a combination of unresolved history and present-day stressors. Some of the most common causes include:

The death of a parent. Losing a parent is one of the most significant triggers for sibling estrangement. Grief surfaces in different ways for different people, and without a parent as the family anchor, old tensions like favoritism, caregiving burdens and unspoken resentments, can rise quickly to the surface.

Inheritance and estate disputes. Money and property have a way of making abstract grievances very concrete. Disagreements over how assets are divided, who made sacrifices during a parent’s illness, or what was “promised” can permanently damage sibling bonds if left unaddressed.

Cultural and values differences. As adults, siblings sometimes grow in dramatically different directions, politically, religiously, or in terms of lifestyle. In families where cultural or religious expectations run deep, a sibling’s choices around marriage, parenting, identity, or beliefs can feel like a personal rejection to the rest of the family.

Life transitions. Marriage, divorce, having children, relocating, or financial changes can all shift the family ecosystem in ways that create distance. A new partner who clashes with the family, differing approaches to raising children, or simply the demands of adult life can quietly erode a once-close relationship.

Long-standing childhood dynamics. Birth order, parental favoritism, and childhood roles — the responsible one, the difficult one, the one who got away with everything — often follow siblings into adulthood without anyone naming them. These patterns can make adult conflicts feel oddly familiar, because in many ways, they are.

How Therapy Can Help

The most important thing a therapist brings to sibling conflict is neutral ground. When two people have decades of shared history, it’s almost impossible to have a difficult conversation without it becoming about everything at once. Therapy provides structure so that conversations stay productive rather than spiraling.

Through the therapeutic process, siblings can begin to understand each other’s experiences without immediately defending their own. Often, what looks like selfishness or indifference from one side is actually unprocessed hurt or fear. Therapy helps make that visible.

For estranged siblings, therapy can also help clarify what each person actually wants. Sometimes reconciliation is possible and both parties want it, but they don’t know how to get there. Other times, the realistic goal is a more limited but respectful relationship, or clarity about why maintaining distance is the healthiest choice.

There is no single outcome that therapy promises. What it does promise is that you won’t have to navigate it alone.

Taking the First Step

If you’re carrying the weight of a difficult sibling relationship, whether you’re actively estranged or simply stuck in patterns that leave everyone feeling hurt, reaching out to a counselor is a meaningful place to start. You deserve support in untangling something this complex. And so does your sibling, wherever they are in the process.

Each therapist is a little bit different, but with Lisa Rogers the process typically begins with an initial consultation where everyone meets together. Lisa will explain confidentiality, outline expectations, and invite each person to share what brought them to therapy. You don’t need to have the “right words”— Lisa will help guide the conversation. Together you will decide if online therapy is right for your family.

From there a regular rhythm of sessions is established. Each of these usually last 50 minutes and may include:

Structured conversations to slow things down and reduce reactivity

Tools for listening and speaking more clearly

Exploration of long-standing family roles or patterns

Gentle guidance when conversations become emotionally charged

Some families worry that online therapy will feel distant or impersonal. In reality, many adult families find that being in their own space helps them feel safer and more grounded during difficult conversations.

What to Expect Emotionally

Virtual therapy with family members can bring a mix of relief, anxiety, and hope. It’s common to feel these things:

Nervous about being misunderstood

Defensive or unsure about sharing openly

Relieved to finally talk about things that have gone unsaid

Surprised by new insights or perspectives

This is all normal. Growth often comes with discomfort, but therapy is designed to move at a pace that feels manageable and respectful for everyone involved.

Practical Tips to Make the Most of Virtual Family Therapy

A few simple steps can make online family therapy more effective:

Choose a private, quiet space
Make sure you’re somewhere you can speak freely without interruptions.

Use reliable technology
Test your internet connection, camera, and audio ahead of time to reduce stress.

Show up with curiosity, not certainty
You don’t need to convince anyone you’re “right.” Therapy works best when everyone is open to understanding…not winning.

Be patient with the process
Family dynamics develop over years. Meaningful change takes time, consistency, and practice between sessions.

Common Questions Adult Families Ask

Can therapy help if we’re very different people?
Yes. Therapy isn’t about agreement, rather it’s about respect, clarity, and healthier interaction.

What if one person is hesitant or skeptical?
That’s common. Even reluctant participants often benefit once conversations feel safer and more structured.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Research and clinical experience show that online therapy can be just as effective, especially when access and consistency improve participation.

A Flexible, Supportive Way to Heal Family Relationships

Virtual therapy removes many of the barriers that keep adult families from getting help (distance, busy schedules, and logistical challenges). More importantly, it creates space for honest conversation, emotional repair, and growth.

At Lisa Rogers Counseling, virtual family therapy is approached with warmth, clarity, and respect for each individual’s experience. You don’t have to have everything figured out before starting. Showing up together is already a meaningful first step.

If your family is ready for better communication, healthier boundaries, and deeper understanding, online therapy can help you begin that work, right where you are.

As adults, many siblings find themselves living in different states, juggling careers, relationships, parenting, and daily responsibilities. While distance can’t erase the bond you share, it can make communication harder, especially when old family patterns, unresolved conflicts, or stress from life transitions get in the way.

If you and your siblings are hoping to reverse the trend of growing emotional distance or misunderstandings that seem to repeat themselves, online therapy can be a powerful way to reconnect and heal.

Online Therapy is a Game Changer for Siblings

One of the greatest advantages of online therapy for adult siblings is accessibility. No matter where each of you live, whether you’re a few hours apart or across the country, you can meet in a secure, supportive virtual space. This allows you to focus on strengthening your relationship without the added stress of traveling or coordinating in-person appointments. Online sessions make it simple to show up as you are, from the comfort of your own home, and begin working through challenges together. Whether you prefer weekly sessions or a slower, more intentional pace, therapy can be tailored to fit your lives.

Distance can sometimes highlight unresolved issues that didn’t surface as strongly when you lived closer. Differences in communication styles, family roles, or expectations around caregiving can slowly build tension over time. Online therapy provides a neutral environment where both of you can be heard and understood. A trained therapist helps you communicate more effectively, recognize old family dynamics, and create new ways of relating that support healthy connection…not conflict.

Explore Patterns the Impact the Whole Family

Online therapy can also help adult siblings navigate life stages that impact the entire family. Maybe one of you is caring for aging parents from a distance, adjusting to a major move, or coping with grief or stress. Therapy offers a space to process these experiences together, reducing resentment and increasing empathy. When you learn to share more openly and listen with intention, your long-distance relationship becomes stronger and more supportive.

For siblings who haven’t always had an easy relationship, online therapy can offer a fresh start. Many adults find it easier to express themselves in virtual sessions because the format feels safe and structured. The therapist guides the conversation so it doesn’t spiral into old arguments. Instead, you work on repairing trust, setting boundaries, and building a healthier connections in ways that honors who each of you is today, not just who you were growing up.

If you and your sibling are living in separate states and want to reconnect, heal old wounds, or simply improve communication, online therapy offers a convenient and effective path forward. You don’t need to be in the same room (or even the same time zone) to build a stronger, more supportive relationship. With help from Lisa Rogers and a willingness to grow together, distance doesn’t have to stand in the way of family connection.

In recent years, teletherapy (mental health treatment via video or phone) has transformed how many people access care.

In recent years, teletherapy (mental health treatment via video or phone) has transformed how many people access care. With nearly everyone striving to balance busy lives, this shift offers a convenient, effective, and increasingly preferred alternative to traditional in‑person sessions.

Teletherapy Isn’t Just Convenient. It Works.

A recent analysis of UCLA’s California Health Interview Survey revealed a striking trend: of roughly 4.8 million California adults who sought help for mental health or substance use in 2023, almost 50% did so exclusively through teletherapy. Another 24% used a hybrid model that combined in-person and remote care. Only 23% relied solely on face-to-face visits. These numbers reflect a growing comfort with and preference for virtual support.

Even national data supports this trend. Within the VA system, 55% of mental health care continued through telemedicine after the pandemic began. Remote therapy has proven to be more than a temporary solution. It’s become a lasting option for ongoing support.

Effectiveness on Par with In‑Person Therapy

Research consistently shows that teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person treatment. Outcomes for virtual sessions are comparable to traditional therapy. Experts like Tao Lin of Penn’s Center for Anxiety Treatment confirm that there’s no clinical difference between the two approaches.

Of course, therapy is deeply personal, and there are some limitations to remote sessions. Video calls may miss subtle nonverbal cues, and phone-only appointments can feel less emotionally connected. Technical issues can sometimes disrupt the flow of a session. Still, many clients find that the comfort of home and the flexibility of remote care make these minor drawbacks manageable.

Real Lives, Real Impact

Consider Sacramento client David Bain, who benefits from teletherapy because of mobility challenges. He shares:

“It’s almost to the point where I wouldn’t be able to get the service if I wasn’t able to get it through telehealth.”

That kind of accessibility can be life-changing. While group therapy has been harder to translate into an online format—some participants feel disconnected or prefer to keep cameras off—individual sessions continue to thrive in virtual spaces.

Who Might Be Left Behind?
Unfortunately, not everyone has equal access. Californians living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level are significantly less likely to use teletherapy. Similarly, rural residents have less access than those in urban areas. For example, 81% of Bay Area residents have used teletherapy compared to 62% in more remote counties. These disparities show how technology, time, and internet access still shape who can benefit from virtual care.

What This Means for You
At Lisa Rogers Counseling, I believe in meeting you where you are, literally and emotionally. That’s why I offer:

Flexible formats including video or phone sessions

Tech support and guidance for a smooth experience

A collaborative approach to tailor therapy to your preferences

Hybrid options where available

Teletherapy is a powerful, effective option for many people. Whether you’re navigating a busy schedule, living in a rural area, or simply prefer the comfort of your own space, remote therapy may be a great fit. California’s shift toward virtual care reflects a broader movement toward accessibility and wellness.

If you’d like to explore whether teletherapy is right for you, I’m here to help. Let’s talk.

College can be an exciting yet challenging time for students. Between academic pressures, social transitions, and newfound independence, mental health support is crucial. Many students are traveling outside of their home state for school in this day and age and that’s where where a multi-state licensed therapist can be a game-changer.

What is a Multi-State Licensed Therapist?

A multi-state licensed therapist is a mental health professional who holds licenses to practice in multiple states. This means they can provide therapy across state lines, which is especially beneficial for college students who may move between home and school throughout the year. With the rise of teletherapy, multi-state licensed therapists make it easier for students to receive consistent and uninterrupted care.

Benefits of a Multi-State Licensed Therapist for College Students

1. Continuity of Care

One of the biggest challenges college students face with therapy is maintaining treatment when they transition between home and school. A multi-state licensed therapist can continue seeing students regardless of their location, ensuring uninterrupted support.

2. Teletherapy Convenience

Many multi-state therapists offer online sessions, making it easier for students to fit therapy into their busy schedules. Whether in a dorm room, at home for the holidays, or studying abroad, students can access mental health support from anywhere.

3. Overcoming State Licensing Limitations

Traditional therapists are typically only licensed to practice in one state, making it difficult for students to continue therapy when they travel. Multi-state licensed therapists eliminate this issue, providing flexibility and peace of mind.

4. Support for Students in Crisis

If a student experiences a mental health crisis while away from home, a multi-state licensed therapist can step in immediately without legal or logistical complications. This ensures they receive the help they need without unnecessary delays.

How to Find a Multi-State Licensed Therapist

If you or your college student are looking for a therapist who can provide care across multiple states, consider the following:

Check Professional Directories – Websites like Psychology Today and TherapyDen allow you to filter therapists based on licensing and location.

Ask Your College Counseling Center – Many universities work with multi-state licensed therapists or can provide referrals.

Verify Licenses – Ensure the therapist holds valid licenses in both your home state and the state where your student attends school.

Look for Teletherapy Options – A therapist offering virtual sessions can be especially convenient for students with busy schedules.

A multi-state licensed therapist like Lisa Rogers offers the flexibility and convenience that college students need to maintain their mental health no matter where they are. If your student frequently moves between states for school, work, or travel, choosing a therapist with multi-state credentials can provide peace of mind for your family. Investing in their mental well-being today can help them thrive in college and beyond.

Family estrangement is an incredibly emotionally difficult and hard to navigate issue for families that struggle with it. While the experience will be different for each family group, estrangement is the distancing of one or more family members from the family unit due to a myriad of reasons.

The most common reasons for family estrangement are:

Extreme negativity

Emotional disconnect

Mental illness

Fundamental worldview disagreements (there has been a rise in political family estrangement)

Destructive behavior

Abuse

These deep rooted issues may result in family members pursuing no-contact, effectively cutting their family off.

So, why is family estrangement on the rise?

As many as 1 in 4 Americans today report experiencing some form of family estrangement. Some contributing factors to why familial estrangement appears to be on the rise may include increased awareness of mental health issues, shifting societal standards around family, and more.

As social media becomes increasingly prevalent in peoples day-to-day lives, younger generations are working to decrease the stigma that surrounds discussions of mental health. A byproduct of this for many young adults has been the realization or recognition of unhealthy patterns they may be complicit in, or that they experience at the hands of family members.

This wide access to mental health knowledge, and the popularization of protecting one’s mental health may be contributing factors to family estrangement as an act of attempting to reduce trauma or negative mental health triggers.

Another potential factor that may have a correlation with rising rates of family estrangement is political disagreements among family members. Whether it be heated discussion around the Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner table, or even just day to day discussions, American families have been experiencing increased political polarization manifesting itself in family settings. This is especially true for young adults (think Generation Z and even Millennials) and their parents.

Whether it be family members struggling with mental health, abusive cycles, trauma, or even political divides that feel insurmountable, familial estrangement can be emotionally troubling for all parties involved.

So, what are some ways that you can cope with family estrangement?

Whether you were the one who initiated family estrangement, or whether you feel shut out by a loved one, it is important to acknowledge that family estrangement involves various people.

It may be helpful to seek out individual therapy to work through your feelings around your experience with family estrangement. Facing this difficult topic in a safe individual therapy session may help you identify the root of the estrangement, and the path that is most beneficial for healing moving forward.

If after self care and emotional healing you feel more able to confront the topic of your family estrangement, it might be time to acknowledge that estrangement doesn’t need to be permanent.

If you feel as though you are ready to take part in mending family relationships, and your family is willing to participate as well, family therapy may be a good option for you and your loved ones.

Here at Lisa Rogers Counseling we can help you and your family sit down together and have safe, productive, and honest conversations that seek to get at the root of your estrangement. No one family member needs to feel responsible for facilitating the hard conversations that this task calls for. Location, facilitation, and any other barriers can be easily remedied with our practice.

As a therapist who is licensed in several states, and has years of experience, Lisa Rogers is here to help. Lisa offers family counseling over video calls that is often helpful for family members who are separated by distance. Calm, collected, and insightful moderation for families struggling with estrangement is available and can serve to strengthen and repair relationships between loved ones.

Major life transitions can be overwhelming and cause ripple effects within the relationship of your extended family. It may feel like everyone in your family has an opinion or something to say which can cause tension between relatives.

Divorce
Cross-country move
Retirement
Welcoming new children
New marriages
Death of a loved one

For many people, family therapy may feel like an intimidating last resort choice, but it doesn’t have to be. When done right, family therapy can be a fantastic choice for repairing or maintaining relationships with your loved ones. With new advances of teletherapy options for your family, therapy is a convenient and effective way for families to connect.

Five reasons to consider family therapy during a period of life transition:

Virtual therapy provides necessary flexibility

We know that one of the main barriers to beginning family therapy (other than raising the topic itself) is coordinating schedules. Our office offers virtual therapy in several states, providing convenient scheduling opportunities, and eliminating barriers between relatives who live far away. With virtual therapy you won’t have to deal with the additional stress of physically coming in as a family.

Fostering open and productive communication

When it comes to major life events, opinions can get heated. This may cause breakdowns in communication between family members. Therapy can help prevent the breakdown of relationships due to poor communication by offering safe and nonjudgmental spaces to speak. In a safe space that provides a degree of separation from the life event, and has a facilitator, family therapy offers relatives the chance to productively communicate with one another.

Strengthening relationships

In addition to communication, which is the basis of relational health, therapy can holistically help strengthen familial bonds. Relationships may be tested during life events such as divorce, conflict, and simply times of stress. Therapy offers a space to collectively process those emotions, working through them to move towards healthy relationships.

Conflict resolution

Just like any other kind of relationship, relatives are bound to experience conflict eventually. And, as such, it is helpful to know how to work through conflict. Family therapy can help relatives set healthy boundaries with one another, and when paired with an environment that encourages communication, it teaches families how to handle conflict well.

Providing support during traumatic situations

Major life transitions can span a wide range of events, but sometimes they may be traumatic. Maybe it is the loss of a loved one, a divorce, or something else. Therapy can help families process events that they collectively experienced, and the grief or any other emotions that may be associated with them. This can help strengthen family compassion, understanding, and overall relieve both personal and relational stress.

Lisa Rogers Counseling offers a convenient and confidential virtual therapy option for families with busy schedules or who are dispersed across state lines. Each member of the group must be a resident of a state that Lisa Rogers Counseling is licensed in (NY, NJ, TX, CA, FL, GA, IL and VT). Contact Lisa Rogers today.
